Orthoceras is the name of an extinct genus of squid with a straight, conical shell. The name, derived from Greek, literally means "straight horn." Orthoceras lived approximately 400 million years ago and is an ancestor of the modern squid. Fossils of Orthoceras are frequently found and are prized for their unique shape and history.
